welcome to 8th grade math on team fusion!
My name is Dave Newendorp and I am the math teacher on Team Fusion. This is my 35th year of teaching and my 33rd here at Indian Hills. I am a 1978 graduate of Floyd Valley High School in Alton, Iowa and a 1982 graduate of the now closed Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa (home of Wells Blue Bunny ice cream!) I earned my Master's Degree at Drake University in 1990. I taught for 2 years in Goldfield, Iowa before moving to Indian Hills in August of 1984. I have been married to my wife, Deb, for 29 years, and we have a daughter who is a junior at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois.
The Algebra students will have homework virtually every day. Pre-Algebra will be with the New Tech Network, which is new for me, so I'm not sure what that will look like on a day-to-day basis. I am somewhat old-school in my approach, and have very high expectations of my students, both behaviorally and work ethic-wise. I try to be in my classroom each morning by 6:30-6:45 and I'm here after school until at least 3:15, (I'll be working After the Bell at least one day a week) so I'm available anytime before and/or after school every day. I put a lot of responsibility on my students to handle things themselves such as make-up work, including tests, and arranging times to work together. I appreciate any help from home encouraging the students to become more independent and responsible.
My philosophy is that I'm not married to any textbook. While the book is used often, I believe that using multiple sources to find what I believe to be the BEST presentation of each lesson means that the textbook is not always used.
